SOURCE – I wanted to start things off by asking about the new album The Wretched Sermon you have out. What were the actual changes that you tried to bring forth on this record?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – Hey thanks, yeah there was not a conscious change that we decided to make, except maybe that we wrote individually at home remotely as opposed to live rehearsals in the practice space due to Covid lockdown restrictions so more attention to detail with both riffs and songwriting occurred. Therefore, I think the songs are better formed and structured and there is no filler or dead weight in there. Also Olan, our drummer, did much of the preproduction so his vision is forefront and its a nice change, but these are accidental changes, we did not sit down with a powerpoint , pen and paper and decide on a certain course of action, new systems evolved naturally to meet the demands of our home imprisonment.
SOURCE – After having been together for such a long time, does that make it harder or easier to come up with new material?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – I think it is the same as always, both Bill and I play guitar frequently at home so we will always have something new every week. it is just a matter of quality control. So in reality, it is no harder or easier. We did not have to force anything out. Unlike trying to shit after ingesting copious amounts of codeine, this was more akin to a morning after 12 cans of beer and a curry, And this material was written over 2016-2021 so its a long time to source quality material mined from our fingers. or rancid assholes. And although Olan is a original member he has only recently rejoined after a lengthy hiatus so his ideas are “fresh” and also Irene is here since 2016 so her input is fresh also, so we have to like learning a new language you see different approaches to concepts,
SOURCE – Did you film any videos for the album The Wretched Sermon?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – We made a Studio montage of video for “killing spree” we will release it later in the summer. A few other things are in the planning stages.Any other videos we have had in the past were fan vidoes so maybe some fan will make something again this time. Which is awesome to see people’s interpretation of our music.
SOURCE – Legal streaming services like Spotify are becoming popular. As artists, what is your opinion of them?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – I dont use spotify. I cannot be arsed with it. I use bandcamp but still only to pay some money to bands I Support, but the actual technology sucks and I am not installing some bullshit app on my phone to make life easy for myself. Spotify steal money from us all and the bastard who owns it is a fat bastard.
SOURCE – What are your thoughts about social media and how it’s affecting the music business?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – I dont like the social media side of things, I prefered the old days before the internet, I am such a dinosaur , i fear and despise new shit. I didnt sign up for this social media circus, I wanna go out and play gigs and tour in the real world, than chase clicks and get likes with vacuous nonsense.
SOURCE – What can be done to reverse the decline in the music industry over the past several years?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – Line all the guilty parties against a wall facing the concrete and put dum dum bullets in the back of their skull. I have no answers, I am a nihilist, i believe there is no solution and only chaos and entropy will swallow everything, we can only be happy along the way to meat grinder, like sheep in a field in the sun, before the abattoir man comes
SOURCE – In Brazil there’s much fans listening to your kind of music. What do you know about the Brazil?
Stephen “Steve” Maher (guitar, vocals) – I know the almighty sepultura, sacafago, sextrash and krisiun, i know you have a colossal jungle and speak the Portuguese language. We wanna come to Brazil, if any promoters want to invite us. no problem… we will come! Also please tell me good underground, death metal, thrash metal, grindcore or crustpunk from your country I need to listen to
