SOURCE – Do you believe your outlook, philosophy, or abilities have changed when it comes to your songwriting from the debut Marie Magdalene EP from 2016 to now – and if so, what areas do you pay more attention to than ever before?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – Our philosophy when writing songs is, that if we feel a buzz during the process, and the riffs and lyrics feels kick-ass and super awesome, we are gonna go with it. If it feels fun to play, we’ll play it!
Our skills have definitely developed, and the songswriting seems to be more progressive. We have gotten more patient with the songs, and better at leaving ideas be for a period of time, and then continue when it feels right. But still, the songs are as diverse as on the EP. Short, long, fast, slow etc etc. As long as it’s fun, it’s good.
SOURCE – What do you feel that Andreas Linnemann contributed in terms of the album’s production (Venenum)?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – Andreas definitely contributed to an all round good experience when creating the album. He’s a great friend, he respects our thoughts and ideas, but still challenges them. We believe this is a healthy relationship with a producer!
Venenum is more raw than our other album, and this was a desire we had, as well as Andreas. (Listen to his work on the new Angerot album as well – KICK ASS)
SOURCE – How was it to participate in the Century Media ISOLATION FESTIVAL?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – Super fun! It was epic to play some sort of show again, we always have a ton of fun when playing. Each and every time!
It was a cool stream, and CM did a nice job of promoting and hosting!
SOURCE – At this point in the band’s career, how do you balance out the fan expectations for what you create and deliver versus your own personal expectations? Do you find they work hand in hand?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – We don’t think to much about the fans’ expectations, we spend more time focusing on where we want to go with the next album. We believe, that if we are fully satisfied with the product and proud of it, the fans will dig it.
SOURCE – What financial impact has COVID-19 had on you and your band? Have you had to cancel or postpone any tours or festival appearances or postpone an album release because of COVID-19 and how will that affect you in the long term?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – We had to cancel a few tours and some headlining gigs. It is what it is – we hope to get back on the road sooner than later and make up for the lost/postponed concerts.
SOURCE – What other steps should record labels, music streaming platforms, and other music industry entities be taking to help struggling musicians through this time?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – Everyone in the music biz needs to support each other! Everyone will gain from this, and everyone’s position will develop positively. Start working, brothers
SOURCE – What would surprise to learn about the business and work ethic that the members of Baest possess? And what do you believe have been some of the keys to your success in this digital age of the music industry?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – We do believe that a big key to success is to keep working – hard and professionally. Show up on time, bring good gear, behave in a touring situation, respond to emails properly and fast, work efficiently with other bands, promoters, venues, labels. Work harder than everybody else.
SOURCE – Everything is a question mark right now, but is there anything you have planned for later on in the year?
Svend Karlsson (Guitar) – We are currently planning a visit to the studio – hopefully something rotten, evil and epic will come out of this…
