SOURCE – What should the fans expect of this new album The Arrival and how would you describe it to the fans that have not listened to it yet?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – A personal history book of what we did the last years. A connection of the old and new DEADLOCK and a combination of old tunes in modern sounds.
Some re-arrangements, re-recordings and previously unreleased songs with the most emotional lyrics we’ve ever had on a record.
SOURCE – As you make more and more albums, does it get more difficult to break new musical ground and do new things?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – Of course – our aim is to re-invent ourselves on every record, but in fact our musical development as a band is the development of our main songwriter Sebastian Reichl. According to his saying it becomes more and more difficult to reach new levels in songwriting, but in the end it works out pretty well.
SOURCE – Have you experienced any differences in how the foreign press treats you and the band compared to how native press and media treats and writes about you?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – There are minor differences when it comes to international press reactions – but in most cases you just see if a pressman went deep into the records or not. If a band develops with each release it’s wrong – if a band stays with it’s sound and arrangements it can be wrong to – that is why we just focus on what we would like to achieve.
SOURCE – You’ve been around in the metal world and the music business for a long time. Tell us what your vibe is on the metal scene today as opposed to earlier Deadlock days.
John Gahlert (Vocals) – The scene is still alive and there are more and more younger fans, who dedicate their lives in metal music – which is great. But also the industry has grown, so it became harder (especially for younger bands) to survive in the business. It’s more about selling records or merchandise than it was 10 years ago – sometimes you do not know if you wear a band shirt or the hottest new apparel brand. Don’t get this wrong, we don’t have problems with this development, but the focus should always be on the music.
SOURCE – The album will probably ‘leak’ online fairly soon. Do you care if your fans, or potential fans, download your album before it’s released?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – Well… we do care, but we also do know, that if the people like it they mostly support the bands by buying the album. That is what makes independent music.
We leave the marketing to the marketers. If the record company does a good promotion job it will cover its expenses and earn money…if not…not.
SOURCE – If Deadlock were to disappear tomorrow, what album would you want to be remembered for?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – Oh please not only a single album – hopefully the passion and dedication we put in all our records will be remembered by our fans.
SOURCE – Have you filmed any videos for this new CD?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – Yes sir – there will be 2 official videos, to be released in early August.
SOURCE – What can we expect as far as new horizons for Deadlock?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – Not sure yet, but expecting something old, something new and something great – this is the maxim we act on.
SOURCE – Do you have any plans of a South America and Brazil tour?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – We really would like to visit South America to play a tour, festivals or even small club shows. Hopefully we will be there soon, unfortunately there are no concrete plans yet.
SOURCE – Any closing words at all?
John Gahlert (Vocals) – “The human soul is larger than the entire universe – and soul is what it is to be human” by Peter Deunov.
