SOURCE – How would you describe the progression between the two full lengths, Reflections and Distortions?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – It’s a massive evolution in sound and scope. The contrast is greater and the range is much larger. We’ve really pushed the dynamics much more on this album so there’s a lot of melancholic harmony as well as crushing heaviness.
SOURCE – What does Distortions mean to you, in terms of what you want to represent as a band?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – I want this album to showcase the growth and development of the band and our art at this captured point of time. A lot has happened to us personally in this time, and we have channelled it through the music as best we can. We think the two lead singles “Echoes” and “Devils” demonstrate each different side of this same coin.
SOURCE – How did your newest member Catherine Glencross (keyboards, vocals) come to join the band?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – Catherine has always had a string love of music and a beautiful voice, so it when I wanted some female vocals on the album, it was the obvious thing to do. As she then started joining us for live appearances it became obvious the extra addition was essential. So then we expanded the sound by adding keyboards and then she became integral to the writing of the new album. Her contribution then inspired me to expand upon my own vocal range too, so it’s worked out perfectly.
SOURCE – Could you discuss the collaboration with Aaron Stainthorpe on Follow Me?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – It’s so wonderful for have Aaron joining us for a guest spot. The song is such an ambitious, expansive effort, the addition of his vocals just adds the perfect gravitas and characterisation to the song. It was also just fantastic to get the opportunity to spend some time together and hang out whilst being creative. He’s a dear friend.
SOURCE – Several artists have recently been talking about issues with streaming services and losing money, while others have been defending it. What are your thoughts on this evolution of the music industry?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – There’s simultaneously greater immediate availability and access which is great from a fan’s perspective if they wish to casually consume music. But if doesn’t compare to the ceremony and investment of buying and appreciating an album as a whole and respecting the whole package. I much rather listen to whole albums than random single songs, and would ester continue with that.
SOURCE – Being a veteran artist, I’d imagine you have a lot of younger musicians that ask your advice. What types of ideas do you try to impart on them?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – Create music and art for your own satisfaction and reward. Anything else on top of that is a bonus.
SOURCE – When it comes to your videos, do you enjoy the creative aspect of that and how you are able to promote them through social media?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – I love videos, be it telling story or simply performance, I love adding an extra dimension to the music. It was great to have the opportunity to do both the Chasms and Devils videos with Andy Green and Ash Pears respectively. Please do check them out if you haven’t already.
SOURCE – To wrap things up, what are your plans for the rest of 2023?
Hamish Glencross (Guitars, Vocals) – The album is released in August and we’re looking to do some live shows, interviews and whatever promotion we can to share this album with people. It’s a very personal album we’re very proud of and passionate about. Thank you for your time.
