SOURCE – Let’s start with the recordings for the new album Quaternary How did the studio time go? What inspired the album title Quaternary?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – Our studio time is always fragmented. As we use our personal studio we actually have a pretty unscheduled process. We don’t have the usual programming because the band is made up of two members and Daniel (producer) lives far from us. We work remotely 90% of the time.
The name “Quaternary” sums up the theme of the songs. It can be referred to the geological period we are currently on but also a reference to the fact that this is the band’s 4th studio record.
SOURCE – Nowadays in every album the person responsible for the sound production is strongly mentioned especially when he is a known one. How important do you think is the producer to the sound of a band?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – In our case, which is a very special one, the producer is the 3rd member of the band. Daniel has been with the band since day one, he is also part of the songwriting since 2013. To us it’s not really a case of being well-known or not, because he’s been our friend for many years now and we are true fans of his work and talent.
SOURCE – Now that you guys have some distance from writing and recording the latest album, Quaternary do you hear it differently?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – After we finish recording a record we then take some time to breathe and rest from it. I think that when we play it now we realize we got the record we planned and wouldn’t change anything. The message will probably go across and that makes us very happy.
SOURCE – Where do you think Quaternary stands in terms of your past releases?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – It’s more mature, more risky and intense than the previous works.. Our records are all very different from one another, it’s not that we do it on purpose, but we tend to let life and experiences reflect on the music we do.
SOURCE – Have you filmed any videos for this new CD?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – We did a video for the single “Fight or Flight”.
SOURCE – A lot of bands are more respected in other countries than their homeland. How is Kandia received in Portugal?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – We can’t complain, really. Though the biggest percentage of followers is mainly distributed through the US and a couple of European countries. We have a loyal fanbase here in Portugal, they’re the best.
SOURCE – Legal streaming services like Tidal, Deezer and Spotify are becoming popular. As artists, what is your opinion of them?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – We have to accept this is the reality now. It’s great for music lovers to discover bands, but we all know how low the payment of streams is. I don’t think these platforms are very respectful of artists but, as I said, this is the reality now. Adapt and survive, I guess.
SOURCE – Is there anything else you’d like to add to those reading this interview?
Nya Cruz (Vocals) – We just want to thank the older fans for their patience and welcome new ones to this wonderful community we dearly call “The Luminous Legion”.
