SOURCE – First question from me is that having been active band for 33 years, I’m ashamed to say that the new album is the first of yours I’ve heard after the band disbanded. How come you’ve managed to steer under my radar for so long?
Pier Gonella (Guitars) – The band had a split after the second album “Fragments of Insanity”(1989), but after some years Necrodeath raised with the album “Mater of All Evil (1999). Than we released many other albums, some classic thrash metal, other more sperimental, as “Draculea” or “Phylogenesis”. The new coming “The Age of Dead Christ” is more close to first 2 album, maybe this is the reason because it’s getting more attention.
SOURCE – What was behind the reunion in 1998 after the split in 1989? Or was it a ‘split’ or just a break…
Peso (Drums) – There has been really split of the band… everybody was disappointed of the scene around us… and we realize that born in Italy has been the greatest mistake if you know what I mean… Anybody of the music metal business wanted work with an Italian band… We were too exotic for this kind of music-biz…Than god Sepultura from your country come up to the top and many promoter start to realize that non only American or north Europe band could be able to play this kind of music… anyway in 1990 I founded the band Necrosadist and after six mouth changed name in Sadist… with this band I play for 5 years recording the first two album (Above the Light and Tribe) but then I get out in 1996 and Claudio the first guitarist of Necrodeath come to call me to reunion the band…
SOURCE – And looking back over 33 years, you must have seen a few changes in the music industry – which do you see as the biggest changes and what are the challenges in making music in 2018?
Peso (Drums) – Everything is changed expert the live show… I mean… when you go on the stage you must show what are you able to do… live… I hate bands that use some tracks as playback and go on with their instrument… on the stage you have to play live… this is the only thing that remain the same since years 50.
SOURCE – After having been together for such a long time, does that make it harder or easier to come up with new material The Age Of Dead Christ?
Peso (Drums) – The way of composition must start alone… when you have the right moment and the good feeling to find again the energy to compose new songs… after 4 year since the 7 deadly sins in the beginning of 2017 have arrived the right moment and jamming a lot with the band the songs of The Age of Dead Christ are borned naturally.
SOURCE – How is the local metal scene in Genoa? Does it compare with Milan or Rome at all – or does it rock harder, for that matter?
Peso (Drums) – In Genoa there is a big but underground scene… Necrodeath and Sadist of course are the oldest band but I know there are a lots of extreme band that play everydays in they rehearsal room.
SOURCE – The internet as a medium plus piracy… What’s your take on it? Can people survive on air and the tiny spotify royalties? Unless someone’s already established, how does one get in the public eye?
Pier Gonella (Guitars) – You know today people “live” on Internet. So often people listen to music by Internet, and see gigs by Internet. The royalties was few at the age of vinyl, now are even less. It’s hard but if you really believe in your band and in music you can find a way to survive. If you don’t fins the right way you will become a false “star” on Facebook and social but you will be nobody in the real music world.
SOURCE – In Brazil there’s much fans listening your kind of music. What do you know about the Brazil?
Pier Gonella (Guitars) – I don’t know much but I know there is a great metal scene. Sometimes we receive gig proposal all along Brazil. We hope to come there and play some gigs!
SOURCE – Anything you wish to add to conclude this interview?
