Brief:
Maryland-based death metallers YATRA resume their savage assault on new album, Born into Chaos. The band’s fourth—their first for Prosthetic Records—album sees the power trio evolve from their doom-sludge origins and unfold into brutish death with scorched black edges. This is what YATRA (Sanskrit for “journey” or “procession”) portended on previous full-length All is Lost (2020). Indeed, the progression into Born into Chaos is purposeful retrograde motion, as the very influences that inspired members Dana Helmuth (vocals, guitar), Sean Lafferty (drums), and Maria Geisbert (bass) initially have re-emerged hell-bent from coffins horrifying and primeval.
Written during the pandemic, Born into Chaos combines the uncertainty of the times—principally, not being able to play live again—and the desire to push forward at all costs. The group often jammed, while Helmuth constantly wrote, always looking to up his game. Riffs were hammered out via voice recorder and exchanged with drummer Lafferty and bassist Geisbert to keep the collaboration between members alive and productive. Raw old-school death metal!
